Plečnik’s house, Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana
Plečnik’s house is a complex of two historic houses along Karunova Street, to which Jože Plečnik added a cylindrical annex and a winter garden between 1923 and 1929. The winter garden borders a spacious garden on the southern side of the house. The annex, which the architect built for himself and in which he lived, was renovated in 2015 without visible alterations. The spaces of the other two houses were transformed into new exhibition and educational areas, while the attic is dedicated to curators and researchers working with Plečnik’s architectural legacy.
The renovation process involved a wide range of professionals, including the client, the City of Ljubljana, the responsible conservation architect Irena Vesel, the authors of the Conservation Plan from the Restoration Centre of Slovenia, and the user, the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana (MGML). Plečnik House is in itself an exceptional cultural monument, as it is one of the rare artist’s houses in the world that has been so well preserved, originally conceived, and fully furnished. A visit is complemented by a permanent exhibition on the life and work of Jože Plečnik, featuring outstanding original models, numerous architectural drawings, a model of Plečnik’s Ljubljana, and the architect’s personal belongings.
