Church of the Incarnation of Christ in Dravlje

The Church of the Incarnation of Christ in Dravlje, designed by architect Marko Mušič, is one of the most significant works of Slovenian sacred architecture of the second half of the 20th century. Built between 1980 and 1985, during a period of intensive urbanisation in Dravlje and the expansion of Ljubljana’s residential neighbourhoods, it represents a key milestone in 20th-century Slovenian architecture. With this church, Mušič developed a distinctive architectural language that offers an original interpretation of the symbolic meaning of sacred space.

A particular quality of the church lies in its sensitive relationship with the historical context. The new building is situated next to the Baroque Church of St Roch, with which it establishes a respectful dialogue. The design was also strongly influenced by the historic tree-lined alley leading towards the cemetery; its direction is symbolically extended into the church through a raised glazed section, becoming one of the key spatial motifs. The building is partially embedded in the terrain, with only skylights and individual structural elements rising above the green roof. As a result, the architecture appears as a continuation of the landscape and, together with the Baroque church, forms a coherent spatial ensemble.

The architectural design is based on circular geometry, which serves not merely as a symbolic motif but as the fundamental organising principle of the entire project. Circular forms recur in the exterior arrangement, liturgical furnishings, roof structure and central worship space, linking the individual spatial sequences. Rather than being conceived as an object to be perceived at a single glance, the church unfolds as an architectural journey. Movement gradually leads the visitor from the exterior towards the central worship space, where the entire interior is revealed around a light-filled centre. The amphitheatrical interior is organised around the central liturgical space, fostering a sense of community, while natural light entering through skylights and glazed openings creates a constantly changing atmosphere and reinforces the symbolic character of the space.
