National and University Library

National and University Library is one of the most important works of Jože Plečnik and a temple of wisdom. It was built on the former site of Prince’s mansion. The building design follows the principle of Renaissance palaces. Brick façade layer is decorated with the stones from the demolished houses in Ljubljana. The interior is designed as a “way of wisdom”, the way out of the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. The entrance to the library is in a side street and deliberately without emphasis, which contributes to greater experience of the staircase hall with pillars with dark polished marble. At the top of the stairs there is the main reading room, full of light. In the late 1990s, the architect Marko Mušič renovated the basement, which previously housed a storage, and partially transformed the ground floor premises. Source: Architectural Guide
