Glince House

The house at Glince is a small-scale building. The existing condition was idyllic, yet modest in its dimensions and materials. Together with the clients the architects decided to retain the key existing elements of the old house — the main façade at the entrance, the gabled roof, some small windows, the vaulted space of the old kitchen, and one room. The part of the house that had been added later was removed, while the old section was extended with a partly single-storey and partly split-level addition. The old part contains the shared traditional living room, dining area, and kitchen, while the new part includes the living room and the parents’ and child’s bedrooms, arranged one above the other. Everything is covered by a unified roof that continues from the original and can be read from the outside as well as from the inside, since the attic is open and allows views through the house. Along the northern façade, a new connecting corridor with a flat roof was inserted, linking all the rooms and incorporating a long wardrobe. The spatial design follows an open plan that allows the spaces to connect in multiple directions and on all sides. Ultimately, all rooms open with views in every direction, while the living area opens onto a large southern terrace overlooking the garden and the forest in the background. All openings are positioned to allow natural light to guide movement through the spaces. The materials are all natural — wood, terrazzo, and clay plasters. The house aims to demonstrate how a unified roof can connect extensions into a cohesive whole. It seeks to show that it is important to treat the roof as a single continuous surface, as only in this way can it organize the whole and connect diverse elements with one another.
