House Š

The house stands in a distinctly rural setting, a hamlet outside Ljubljana. A small farmhouse and a hayrack once stood in its place, and became the basis for its design. The main challenges were the sloping terrain to the north and the road to the south. Consequently, living spaces with large glazed surfaces open out towards the north and west, thereby offering greater privacy and views of the forest. The house connects to the terrain on two levels. The partially sunken basement opens to the northern courtyard and garage access. Exposed concrete forms the base for the upper volume constructed entirely of timber, which connects to the south terrain via the main entrance, the guest courtyard and the swimming pool, shielded from the road by a green barrier. The basement houses the garage, utility rooms and a ‘farmhouse room’, while the ground floor features an open-plan living area extending to the ridge, connected to the terrace, and the master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The gallery above the living area features the ‘grandkids room’. A key design feature is the exposed larch timber structure, while the rural character is complemented by a porch on the eastern side. In contrast to the more rustic exterior, the studio designed a contemporary, unique and colourful interior.
