Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ljubljana
The project aimed to provide new classrooms for the school and kindergarten of the Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Ljubljana. The intervention is designed with the intention of positioning the classrooms as close as possible to the central lobby. The architectural language follows the logic of the existing complex to maintain its clear readability. The additions are made of solid wood construction, which allows static stability of the building after renovation. Exposed wooden construction elements, wooden windows and doors create a natural interior atmosphere. With its brick facade the building blends in with its urban surroundings.
The second phase of the renovation included a new dining room with a renovated kitchen and classrooms for gardeners and cooks. A small gym for children with special needs was added to the extended health unit. The visible timber construction, wooden joinery and flooring created a natural interior ambience. The construction followed reflections on the importance of sustainability, calls for the use of local wood and visions of creating a quality living environment for young people.
