Cultural Centre Stara Fužina

The Cultural Centre in Stara Fužina was built in 1983 through a community contribution, volunteer work and the knowledge of local villagers. From the outset, it was therefore more than a building: it was a material expression of community, solidarity and local memory. The renovation continues this legacy and reintroduces the building into the contemporary life of the village. The programme combines a multifunctional hall, spaces for the local community and associations, a coworking space, and a gallery and memorial room dedicated to the painter Valentin Hodnik, whose work is closely connected to the Bohinj landscape. The previously unused attic has been transformed into a workspace with views towards the surrounding mountains. The intervention also extends into the public realm: a new covered stage, an improved entrance to the market and seating areas transform the former traffic edge into a space for gathering and events.

The architectural expression draws on local building traditions. The façade, made of charred spruce wood protected with natural oils, is designed to change naturally over time under the influence of weather and ageing. Planters with local vegetation and bird nesting boxes reinterpret the tradition of wooden elements found on Bohinj farmsteads. Rather than seeking monumentality, the renovation creates an open and adaptable framework for culture, work and the everyday life of the community.
