Homeless Shelter Ljubljana
On Poljanska Street, a new building for the Homeless Shelter is currently under construction on the site where the building with the same purpose was demolished in November 2024. The main aim of the project is to provide suitable conditions for the operation of the shelter at its current location. The basic aim of the shelter is to ensure safety, basic care, social support, and opportunities for the reintegration of homeless people into society, which is a key step toward addressing homelessness and improving the quality of life for the city’s most vulnerable residents.
The new building is designed as an atrium tower with five above-ground floors. A large part of the ground floor is intended for activities serving a wider group of users—such as a food distribution area, sanitary facilities, and rooms for counseling and other activities. Sleeping areas are located on the first floor, while the second, third, and fourth floors contain residential units with shared kitchens. The volume of the Homeless Shelter is conceived as an almost regular cube, wrapped in a continuous façade envelope that extends along the southern and eastern edges of the site, forming a visual barrier that shields courtyard users from views from the street.
