Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts

The ZRC SAZU building is located on the edge of the hilly landscape, the edge of the settlement, the edge of the marshes, the edge of the fields and the edge of the forest. The architecture design is based on the dynamics of the open and closed surfaces, the vertical and horizontal joints, the translucent and opaque planes that form the building wrap and play with directing views of the landscape. The facades of the building are large, transparent windows, framed in a solid passepartout that frames the building mass. Part of the façade wrap is made of clay. Packed clay construction is presented as a vernacular element. Bird nests in the clay facade walls will allow bird populations to be monitored and their ecology explored.
