Komunala Kranj Circular Economy Hub

With the Zarta Circular Economy Hub, Komunala Kranj brings its operations to a single location. Next to the wastewater treatment plant, collection centre and warehouses, the new building complements the complex with office spaces and other facilities. With a multi-purpose hall, a second-hand shop and a café, the Zarta Centre is also an educational and social hub, raising awareness of the circular economy, recycling and environmental protection. The building’s structure is mostly timber, which allows for significantly lower material consumption, a lower carbon footprint and faster construction. The reuse of materials was also a key factor in the design, mainly in the selection of flooring, lighting and furniture. The circular design stems from the spatial context and functional benefits. Due to its shape, the building opens equally towards the road, the park and the car park. At the centre of the building is an atrium that illuminates the circular corridor and facilitates clear communication. The circular design is also rational in terms of the ratio of floor areas, fire safety and layout of services. The Zarta Circular Economy Hub embodies a sustainable vision for the company’s future and serves as a space for collaboration, education and engagement with the local community.
