Bled Boathouse

The Zaka Boathouse on the western shore of Lake Bled is an example of modest revitalisation that brings together architecture, ecology and scientific research. Rather than constructing a new building, the project preserved the existing timber structure, its proportions and character. The timber structure and façade cladding were restored and protected with natural pine resin. The original façade boards were reused, but offset and installed at different angles. This creates a translucent envelope that allows light, air and views to pass through, connecting the interior with the lake and surrounding landscape. The façade becomes a filter and a frame for experiencing the water, sky and shoreline.

The boathouse serves as storage for research boats operated by the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO) for monitoring the water quality of Lake Bled. The renovation also improved the interior conditions through the use of timber floorboards. A distinctive feature is the roof, fitted with wooden trays planted with local Alpine species. The trays contain filtering layers of stone, gravel, sand, soil and coconut fibre. Lake water is pumped through the layers, naturally filtered and then used to irrigate the plants. The roof thus combines vegetation, water filtration and an educational function. The project demonstrates how a small intervention can preserve existing architecture while adding ecological and educational value.
