Ferant’s Garden Office
On the site of the former Roman Forum Emona in the centre of Ljubljana, Edvard Ravnikar designed the Ferant’s Garden neighbourhood between 1966 and 1975. The area consists of a group of apartment blocks with deep, two-sided apartments and a public programme on the ground floor, which also includes office space of a2o2 architects.
The building has been extensively remodelled several times since its construction. Many haphazardly added layers covered the original substance. With the help of the responsible conservator, the authors planned the renovation as a minimally invasive intervention that would highlight the existing preserved elements as much as possible.
Plasterboard cladding, suspended secondary ceiling and partitions were removed. Unified paving and bright furnishings of natural materials emphasize the existing structures and details. The new glazing takes into account the original details and paraphrases them in a modern, technically appropriate design. Renovation that follows the conservator’s guidelines is a study approach that could be continued on the entire ground floor of Block B.
