The TR3 high-rise and Trg republike in Ljubljana

Trg republike (Republic Square) is the largest square in Ljubljana. For several decades it was used as a public parking space. Only after renovation, completed in 2014, it was re- established as the principal city square of national significance. Between 1962 and 1982, a major architectural intervention was carried out by a group of architects led by Edvard Ravnikar. In 1963, construction of an underground garage began, only to be halted in October 1964 due lack of funds. In 1965, an extension to the Jože Plečnik High School was built, followed in 1971 by the Maximarket department store and the Nova Ljubljanska banka high-rise building with an extension and a platform. In 1975, the area of the former “nun’s garden” was re-designed and a monument to the revolution was erected. In 1976, the TR3 high-rise building with an extension was added. The construction of Cankarjev dom began in 1979 and was completed in 1981.

The architectural tour of Trg republike, conducted by the conservator Tina Potočnik (ZVKDS), will comprise the key milestones of the entire complex, as well as the interior of the TR3 office building.
