Renovation of a historic apartment in Ljubljana

The renovation of a historic apartment in central Ljubljana, designed by STRIP LAB, is based on respecting the existing fabric and subtly upgrading it for contemporary living. Instead of radical interventions, the architects preserved the original layout characteristics, doors, parquet flooring, built-in elements and ceiling heights, while improving functionality and spatial flow through restrained interventions. The living area is organised as an open plan combining kitchen, dining and living spaces, with clearly defined functions and a calm material palette of wood, stone and ceramics. Custom-designed built-in furniture articulates the space without enclosing it, while darker finishes in the sleeping area create a sense of intimacy. The bathrooms follow a restrained, timeless aesthetic.

High ceilings are retained as an important contributor to indoor comfort, and the clients’ existing furniture pieces are thoughtfully integrated into the new design. The project establishes a balanced dialogue between heritage and contemporary needs, creating a harmonious and functional home, grounded in its spatial and historical context.

The apartment is located in Ljubljana.
