BarRiera in Trieste
The investor’s desire to open a new bar on Largo Barriera Vecchia, with the aim of complementing the existing business in Trieste and achieving greater recognition abroad, was the starting point for the design of a completely new interior. The main idea was based on introducing Slovenian local character into the historically recognizable commercial district of Trieste, emphasizing Slovenian tradition and preserving the memory of the long-standing connection between the Karst and Trieste – a connection that is still very much alive today. In this area stands the famous covered market, a symbol of important contacts between the city and the Slovenian hinterland. We also expressed the homage to the market in the interior of the bar. In the central part of the space, a smaller “section” of the market – a ham room is designed, in which the company’s products are exhibited as a clearly recognizable tribute to local tradition.
Inside the bar, different atmospheres alternate: the entrance area is designed as a place for drinking coffee and short meetings, while the interior gradually acquires a more intimate character. The last space is designed as a modern wine room – bottle racks, stone wall cladding that evokes a cellar atmosphere, and wooden paneling that illustrates an old Karst door create the feeling of an authentic Karst shelter. We managed the project comprehensively – from the conceptual design and coordination with all participants to the implementation, with special attention to detail. Our work also included the design of the logo and the entire signage system in the restaurant. A special highlight is the collaboration with illustrator Nea Likar (Sketchstudio), who created a unique wall illustration. The mural subtly tells the past and present story of the Karst, intertwined with the story of the investor’s family and their journey in the hospitality industry and tradition.
