My Museum Bookstore: From Floor Plan to Model – MAO workshop

The bookstore of the Museum of Architecture and Design is located at Fužine Castle, a place where some of the greatest writers of their time once gathered. The castle’s original owners, the Khisl family, played an important role in promoting Protestantism and the Slovene written word. They hosted influential reformers such as Primož Trubar and Jurij Dalmatin. Through their support, the Khisls also contributed to the establishment of one of the first book printing houses in Slovene lands and the first in Ljubljana (1575).

Today, five hundred years later, the castle is home to a contemporary museum bookstore, where visitors can find books related to exhibitions, as well as titles on architecture, design, and photography. A special corner is dedicated to children’s books and products by Slovenian designers, such as posters, jewelry, and toys. The museum bookstore is not just an ordinary shop, it is a space where visitors prepare for exhibitions, browse through books, and chat with one another. During the workshop, children explore how architects designed the bookstore’s furniture elements, how books and objects are displayed, how visitors move through the space, and what purpose the hidden drawers serve.
