LOKAL, Local Arts & Crafts Gallery

The reconstruction of a stone-built house in the heart of the old village core of Štanjel presented a significant challenge, both logistically and structurally. The owners aimed to integrate new content into the heritage with minimal intervention while ensuring the comfort expected in the 21st century. The house underwent structural repair with the construction of sub-foundations, injection of stratified walls, and extensive reinforcement with steel bars across the entire wall surface. Walls were further connected with reinforced concrete slabs on the first floor. The most significant challenge on a small area was the placement of stairs connecting the ground floor and upper floor. The layout followed traditional room organization, with the kitchen and dining area on the ground floor serving as a semi-public space for hosting visitors, while the upper floor accommodated more private spaces for leisure and sleeping. The basement houses a gallery of local applied arts. Collaboration with ZVKDS OE Nova Gorica ensured special attention to external building elements, including the facade, windows crafted in a local artisan workshop, and particularly the entrance doors, meticulously restored to their original state by the owner with care and love.
