The Pilon Gallery Ajdovščina Renovation Project

The renovation of Pilon Gallery in Ajdovščina marks an important milestone in the preservation and presentation of the cultural heritage of Veno Pilon, one of the most prominent Slovene visual artists of the 20th century, as well as the architectural heritage of architect Svetozar Križaj, who received the Plečnik Award in 1976 for the renovation of two town craftsmen’s houses. The gallery, located in the artist’s family home in the centre of Ajdovščina, was established to collect, research, and present Pilon’s extensive oeuvre and to raise awareness of his significance within the Slovene and broader European cultural space. The renovation design was prepared by Vesna Krašna Vodopivec, and the works were carried out under the professional supervision of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia, Nova Gorica Regional Unit. Through the renovation, the gallery has gained a renewed opportunity to strengthen its role and bring cultural heritage closer to contemporary visitors.

The primary goal of the renovation was to ensure suitable spatial and technical conditions for the secure storage of artworks and the high-quality presentation of both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Special attention was paid to improving climate control, lighting, and security systems, as these are crucial elements for the long-term preservation of sensitive fine arts, photographs, and archival materials. The renovated spaces allow for better exhibition transparency, a clearer presentation of Pilon’s creative evolution, and a more in-depth understanding of his artistic expression. A key aspect of the renovation is also the modernization of the gallery in terms of accessibility and user experience. The new exhibition concept incorporates contemporary interpretative approaches that help visitors better understand the artist’s life and work. The renovated Pilon Gallery holds great importance for the local community as well. It serves as a vital cultural hub for Ajdovščina and contributes to the town’s identity as a place with a rich artistic tradition. At the same time, it strengthens the connection between heritage and the modern era while encouraging cultural tourism in the region.
