Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste (Cultural Centre)

The Cultural Centre in Trieste (1957–1964), home to the Slovene Permanent Theatre (Teatro Stabile Sloveno), is one of the key examples of post-war modernist architecture created by Slovenians outside their home country. It was designed by Edo Mihevc as a multifunctional cultural centre and the permanent venue of Slovene professional theatre production in Italy. The building is defined by a clearly articulated volume and a strongly vertical façade that symbolically evokes a theatre curtain within the urban space. The interior, with its softly shaped auditorium, high-quality acoustics, and revolving stage, combines technical sophistication with a representative character. The building remains a lasting symbol of the cultural identity and presence of the Slovene community in Italy.
