Renovation of the Glej Theatre

In Gledališče Glej, a cultural hub in Ljubljana, the foyer and restrooms for visitors and performers have been renovated, modernizing functionality while preserving the historical character of the space. The new elements and interventions have been carefully designed to align with the theater’s unique identity, enhancing its aesthetics while maintaining its authenticity. The renovation represents an important step in preserving and strengthening the local cultural scene, allowing Gledališče Glej to remain a key center for alternative arts in Ljubljana, providing a space for events and artistic gatherings. The design focused on preserving original high-quality architectural elements and recycling existing building materials, emphasizing sustainability. The renovation included the removal of partition walls, restoring the spacious entrance hall with its distinctive arches, supported by stone columns made of grey Podpeč limestone. The added elements enhance the multifunctionality and adaptability of the space. A new restroom unit has been introduced as a freestanding structure that respects the elegance of the historical setting. Despite the theater’s compact dimensions, which do not fully meet its needs, the multifunctional design creates the illusion of expanded space. Every available corner has been carefully utilized for the storage of theater equipment. The space now features a visually dynamic aesthetic that complements its historic elements. The flooring is divided by randomly placed diagonal lines, creating an interplay of black, white, and colored surfaces. Upholstered benches and custom-designed furniture, made from recycled materials, add a modern touch and increased functionality. The renovation encourages creativity and allows for flexible programming of events in Gledališče Glej. Preserving high-quality existing structural elements and repurposing building materials not only contributes to sustainability but also maintains the space’s unique character. The new elements subtly complement and elevate the existing architecture, creating a harmonious and contemporary environment for theater creators and visitors. With this transformation, Gledališče Glej presents itself as a dynamic space, open to new ideas and opportunities.
