Palace of the City Municipality Kranj – OLO Kranj
- Edvard Ravnikar
The OLO Kranj building, today known as the Palace of the City Municipality of Kranj, is one of the most important works by architect Edvard Ravnikar and also a pinnacle of Slovenian postwar modernism, now declared a cultural monument of national significance. Ravnikar designed it as a representative administrative building that, with its modern yet thoughtfully articulated architectural language, integrates sensitively into the historic city centre. The building is distinguished by its clear composition, halls and ground-floor atrium, carefully designed interior furnishings, and its recognizable material and roof design, in which Ravnikar creatively combined contemporary architecture with the local building tradition. For this reason, OLO Kranj is not just an administrative building but an important public space and one of the most prominent symbols of Ravnikar’s architecture. Particular significance is attached to the recently completed window renovation, which represents an excellent example of a thoughtful compromise between preserving protected elements of the architectural heritage and ensuring modern comfort. The restoration demonstrated that, with a sensitive approach, it is possible to both safeguard the building’s original architectural character and simultaneously improve the quality of its everyday functional environment.
