Future Heritage
The concept of heritage is deeply intertwined with our understanding of the past. Which parts of history do we choose to preserve, protect, and highlight? What drives us to consider certain elements valuable, while others remain overlooked? How does the significance of these elements change over time? Heritage is also an endless source of inspiration, encouraging us to reflect on the legacy we leave for future generations.
The central theme of this year’s Open House Slovenia festival is Future Heritage. It reexamines the concept of heritage in the context of space and architecture—its meaning, evaluation, and relevance for the future. The festival invites visitors to explore buildings and spaces along with the fascinating stories they hold. From innovative approaches to preservation, to finding a balance between honoring tradition and local character, and addressing the complex challenges of the present—this theme offers a space for thoughtful reflection and discovery.
The theme also highlights a key question: which practices of today will become the heritage of tomorrow? The spaces and architecture we create today will shape the understanding of history and identity for future generations. By encouraging dialogue and critical thinking between festival visitors and the authors of the featured projects, this year’s Open House Slovenia festival aims to deepen the understanding of architecture’s role in shaping our shared future.
