When the wood is burned, carbonization of the wood occurs, which means that the carbon in the wood is activated and begins to react with the air. This reaction forms a protective layer around the wood, protecting it from weathering, mold, insects and rot. At the same time, the wood fibers are compressed and become stronger due to carbonization, which contributes to their durability.
