While in winter the sun is welcome to warm up the rooms through windows facing south or west, it is now necessary to shade the windows appropriately to prevent overheating. When shading windows, it is often thought that an internal shade can adequately prevent the glass from heating up. This is erroneous and may have a more psychological effect, due to the reduction of the visible sun patch in the room. When the glass is heated, it represents a large source of heat that is emitted into the room. Therefore, it is necessary to shade the windows on the outside.

Mrežasto zunanje in zatemnitveno notranje senčilo v otroški sobi.

In attic spaces, even more attention should be paid to protection against overheating. Sloping roof windows face the sun and are more susceptible to overheating than facade windows. Bedrooms and children’s rooms often have a roof window in addition to the facade window, in order to achieve better light distribution throughout the entire space and sufficient lighting. In this case, the roof window can be shaded or with an external mesh so-called screen shade, which partially transmits light through a dense mesh fabric and at the same time protects the glass from overheating. It is used in the summer. Alternatively, an external roller blind can be used, which provides even better protection against overheating, as it covers the entire window, including the frame. When fully lowered, it creates complete darkness for a good night’s sleep and muffles the sound of raindrops. The roller blind has several functions, so it is a useful shade throughout the year.

If the room depends only on the light source of the skylights, it is necessary to consider whether to use a roller blind or rather a combination of a transparent external blind and an internal blackout blind. This is especially true for bathrooms or staircases, if they are oriented to the sunny side. The room will be protected from overheating and will have light at the same time. With an internal blind, complete darkness or partial blackout can be ensured, depending on the purpose of the room.

Mrežasta zunanja senčila na hiši XXX, foto: xxx

Smaller windows also need to be shaded
To ensure a suitable internal temperature, smaller windows also need to be shaded. The rooms in the attic have less volume due to the sloping roof, so the air heats up faster. All glass surfaces facing south and west need to be properly protected from heat from the outside.

Larger window surfaces in a gentle roof slope of 20 to 30 degrees oriented to the north also need protection from the sun. Despite the northern orientation, the roof windows will still be illuminated by the sun when it is highest in the sky. Here, a mesh shade will be effective enough.

Alu zunanja roleta na strešnem oknu.

Shading on time is key
If the windows are not shaded in time, not only the indoor air will heat up, but also the walls, floors and other interior surfaces, which makes the feeling of heat in the room persist even in the late afternoon and evening. Such rooms are much more difficult to cool, so action must be taken before the room is directly exposed to the heat. If external blinds are difficult to access or awkward to use, they will often remain unused. If the roof windows are installed out of reach, it makes sense to consider electrified blinds, as they will be used more often and, above all, on time due to their simple operation by pressing the button on the remote control.

There is also an application on the phone that can be used to control all electrified products. If we forgot to lower the blinds in the morning rush, we can lower them later and thus prevent the power of the sun from doing its job.

Senčenje v spalnici.

Easy operation does not require electricity
A solar-powered external blind can be installed on the windows, which operates independently of electricity. It is operated similarly to an electrically powered blind, via a wireless remote control.

This article is an advertising message by VELUX Slovenija.

We have entered the summer season, when it is necessary to protect our home from overheating in a timely and effective manner.
