Plečnik’s Green Ljubljana
Plečnik’s work in Ljubljana is extensive and diverse. In addition to built structures, more than fifty open space arrangements were carried out based on his plans, often in several design variants. Plečnik designed almost every possible type of open space: streets, squares, promenades, parks, gardens, children’s playgrounds, viewing terraces, church surroundings, and even the Garden of All Saints.
The walk will begin at Congress Square, where we will explore Plečnik’s arrangements of the square and Zvezda Park. From there, we will continue along Vegova Street, passing the park in front of the Glasbena matica (Music Society) and the terraces near the National and University Library (NUK), all the way to the monument to the Illyrian Provinces, which stands on the axis of Congress Square. We will look into the courtyards of Križanke and continue along Emonska Street to the Trnovo Bridge and the landscaped Gradaščica riverbanks. The walk will conclude with a description of the garden next to Plečnik’s House.
The architectural walk will be guided by MSc Darja Pergovnik, landscape architect and conservator. The tour will be illustrated with insights from the book Plečnik’s Green Ljubljana (Plečnikova zelena Ljubljana), authored by the guide and published by the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana – Plečnik House.
